Though you could find Marty, Barb and Jake at either Rendezvous in Palm Springs or the Shore House at Lake Tahoe at any given time, Marty and Barb generally hang out at the Shore House and Jake spends his time at Rendezvous. |
Barb and Marty have lived at Lake Tahoe since 1973 where their son, Jake, was born in 1984. Marty and Barb are both ministers of the Universal Life Church, and have performed over 800 weddings at the Shore House. Barb is also a Notary Public, a Certified Massage Therapist and an award winning Bed and Breakfast Chef. Marty owned restaurants in his early years and was a professional chef as well. He also holds a Captain's License from the U.S. Coast Guard and pilots the "Lady of the Lake" cabin cruiser.
Barb has been an outdoorswoman for most of her life. She has backpacked and hiked in Canada, Nepal, Peru, and many areas of the US. She has traveled to Europe, Asia, South America, and to most countries of North and Central America. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1969, and got her Masters in Psychology from San Jose State University in 1973.
Marty graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1969, while owning a restaurant and a gas station which helped him pay for college and give him his start as an entrepreneur. He spent 6 months driving cross country in 1973, looking for eternal summer. He arrived in Arizona in July, and finding 115 degrees and no trees, decided to look elsewhere. He fell in love with the beauty of Lake Tahoe, and started a magazine which he printed himself. This turned into Tahoe Crafts Printing, which grew into the largest printing company in the area. Marty sold it after 25 years in 1998. Marty is the proud owner of a Harley Fat Boy, which he rides as often as possible, and he keeps healthy and strong by practicing karate as a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.
When the printing company was sold, Marty and Barb bought a boutique hotel in Palm Springs, California. They intended to renovate it and export many of their successful ideas from the Shore House. It was 500 miles away and they found it difficult to run both properties.
Their son, Jake graduated from UC San Diego in June, 2006 with a Major in Economics and a minor in Theatre. He was a ski racer for most of his life, and was Co-Captain of the UCSD ski team. He seems to have taken the best from both of his parents, being a backpacker, skier, and budding entrepreneur. Jake traveled extensively up and down the East Coast of the United States, then South America. When it came time to get to working, Jake offered to take over the management of Ballantines Original Hotel in Palm Springs. Marty and Barb took Jake in as a family partner and he took over in September of 2007. He completely renovated the property and reopened it as Rendezvous B&B in January of 2008 (now the Coolest Place to Stay in Palm Springs).

Betty and the Inn both got their start about the same time (1930’s!!) Her start was in Minnesota, oh sure, you betcha. Her husband's Air Force career took them from coast to coast and England and back with many stops along the way. They even had their own B&B and Ostrich Ranch near Sedona, AZ. She has been the wife of the same lucky guy for 56 years, Mom to 4 daughters, school teacher, business partner, and list goes on and on.
Cergio was born and raised in the Palm Springs area. He actually went up on the Tram the first day it opened! After many years of travel around the west coast as a Training Chef, Cergio then managed Country Club dining rooms such as Mission Hills and Bermuda Dunes, and was Executive Chef at the Betty Ford Center.
Karen is a Texas native and moved to California 10 years ago. She trained in California as a raw food culinary chef featuring a diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. During Karen’s off time you can usually find her in her barn, on top of a horse, or in the kitchen creating one of her amazing “raw delights”.
